Tokoriki Diving, Fiji: Tokoriki Diving: November was all about Butterflyfish

Saturday November 1, 2008

We were pleased to be active participants in the 2008 Great Fiji Butterflyfish Count – the first event of its kind in Fiji.

This is the first in what is hopefully an annual event spotlighting Fiji’s wonderful butterflyfish, the most colourful of our reef fish.

Keen divers and snorkellers, both guests and staff, were given a presentation on butterflyfish features and identification. Equipped with a special waterproof Butterflyfish I.D. card, each participant counted numbers of Butterflyfish over a 30 minute period.

Information collected was transferred to data sheets and at the end of the week, sent to the Great Fiji Butterflyfish Project for collation and dissemination.

We carried out 21 surveys in total, on eight different dive and snorkel sites. All surveys revealed large numbers of Butterflyfish with at least 12 species recorded.

Dunk’s Canyon and Edenville were the pick of the bunch, with a remarkable 17 species identified at both sites.

We look forward to taking part in next years’ event, which we hope will prove to be a fun way to highlight our wonderful coral reef while providing some valuable statistical information
